FAQ

1. What exactly is Carriero?

Carriero is a panfandom game with a soft spot for deeply unsettling characters applied here. The Inside Carriero page will give you information about the asylum itself.

2. Who runs the place?

Wouldn't you like to know?

In character, the closest thing to management Carriero has seems to be Linda, a computer system left on its own for a little too long, and with just enough Artificial Intelligence to be feeling the effects of that. The only information about this mythical Linda can be found engraved on a table near the entrance to the asylum gardens.

Carriero Asylum
In remembrance of my dear wife Linda.

Out of character, your current mods are Bird and Lenga. You can get in touch with them here.

3. Does the game have an over-arching plot?

Yes, although it is admittedly slow and highly open to change based on the outcomes of individual events. Speaking of which...

4. What sort of events does Carriero have?

All sorts! There are, in particular, three distinct kinds:
Seasonal events are generally small and revolve around the mandatory celebration of a holiday or special occasion. It's for your own good, really.
Minor events can affect all or part of the game, usually lasting a relatively short amount of time, and having no impact on the general playing of the game. The characters, however, may not consider them so minor.
Major events involve the entire game and may or may not involve an environment change, significant plot development, and the high potential for character traumatisation, injury, and/or death.

Overall, the events can be quite serious or far more "crack"-like in nature. In addition, we encourage and welcome player plots, so long as you bring them up with a mod first.

5. What happens when my character arrives?

Upon arrival, characters wake up in their assigned room and bed, wearing a nightgown. In the closet is three sets of clothing, including shoes, in their size. On the nightstand is the key to the room, as well as their portable computer, information on which can be found here.

6. Can the keys and communication devices be stolen?

Yes, and you can effectively pretend to be another character, at least according to Linda, for as long as they are alive.

7. So that means my character can die?

They can and they very likely will, considering Carriero's track record. Things happen here, what can we say? When a character dies, their body remains wherever left until a certain point of decay is reached, at which point anyone near the body is transported out of the room, as well as out of their bedroom. The character will wake up in the room, as upon arrival, anywhere from 1 to 7 days later (a RNG is used, generally), completely cleaned, healed, and alive. Their keys and communicator, regardless of where they were when death occurred, will be back on their nightstand.

Periodically, the system responsible for resurrection can go a little haywire, meaning that things may go wrong with the respawn. While in the process of planning a death, make sure you talk to a moderator, as there may be other plots in effect, and there are specific, special steps to follow when bringing a character back to life.

8. What languages are spoken in Carriero? How do the characters communicate?

By default, they will speak "common": The asylum auto-translates everything they say so it will be understandable to others. They can, however, use their own language for a short amount of time before Linda catches on if they concentrate on it, or if there is a strong emotion behind it (cursing, declarations of love, etc.), or if they do it normally (as in, if their canon has them throw in random foreign words into their normal English/Japanese/whatever speech).
The written word will be translated if sent to someone through the network; it will, however, stay the same and thus unreadable for everyone who does not know how to read the language if hand-written on paper or another surface.

Please keep in mind that Japanese honorifics and words will be mostly eleminated by the autotranslation that the asylum provides (and that non-Japanese-speaking characters would of course not use them in the first place). No honorifics is the current convention among our Japanese characters, but if you want to use them because they are very important to your character, you may.

The third magic word is "Myers-Briggs."

9. Can my character break another's, or the game's forth wall?

If and only if your character is shown in canon to be extremely genre savvy, have no fourth wall of their own, or be well-versed in a particular canon (express discussion of a specific movie or book, for example), you may ask every character of the canon in-game for permission. Every player must give their permission to have their fourthwalls tampered with before it can be allowed to happen.

Unless there is canon evidence for your character knowing another as fictional, at most they will be reminded of a similar show, or something else in the genre.

10. Can my character get pregnant?

While the rule is generally no, there may be circumstances in which Linda allows a baby to be carried to term, only to take it away from the mother upon birth. In the event that something (read: unprotected hanky panky) happens that you would like to submit as evidence for pregnancy, please bring it to a mod.

11. Are there any game NPCs?

Yes. Obviously, there is Linda, the AI calling the shots. Along with her, other NPCs may make appearances from time to time, generally serving a plot purpose. Information will be brought forth about those characters as they are used.

12. Who can I app?

We invite you to read the application FAQ for questions on that and more concerning the application process.

13. What happens when I have to go on hiatus?

There are two options: putting your character on autopilot or putting them to sleep in their rooms. With the latter option, the rooms will be locked, and nobody will be able to get inside to them, or out of them. The bathroom's other door will be sealed as well. The walls and doors are now indestructible, and their device doesn't work anymore. The only signs for them not being gone from the building are that the bathroom isn't accessible from the other room (if that room is occupied and thus accessible at all, the occupant will just have to ask someone if they can use theirs), and that the subject number on the plate outside the room (under the room number) is still there.

OOCly, please comment using the appropriate form here. A note in the OOC community is nice for your fellow players, but not necessary.

14. What happens when I drop a character?

The character will vanish from the asylum, the room that connects the bedroom to the hallway and the bathroom will be locked. The subject number on the room number plate will disappear.

OOCly, please comment using the appropriate form here and know that Linda will be sad to see them go.

15. What are the game communities? How do they work?

[community profile] carriero, the Main Community.
This is used like any social networking site, ICly. You can text or use audio or video message. Usually, everything will go up on the network instead of being directed to a single person, but you can of course lock it to someone, to more people, or away from someone (simply put [locked to] or [filtered from] into the subject line of your post or tag).
It has proven useful to put the format of the post (text, video, or audio) into the subject line. We ask you to try and keep the action in those posts to a minimum (accidential recordings of action are, of course, fine). If, in a thread, the partners decide to meet in person, you can keep that in the thread or make a log for it. That is your decision.

[community profile] carriero_logs, the Logs Community.
This is for prose and face-to-face interactions. Feel free to use paragraph prose of actionspam-style, whichever you are more comfortable with. An outline for how to set up your posts in this community is provided on the comm profile.

[community profile] carriero_ooc, the Out-of-Character Community.
Introductions, notices to the rest of the game, plotting, memes, and modposts will all occur here.

16. How does the Activity Check work, and what do I need to do to pass it?

Activity checks are posted on the first of every month. Requirements for the check are as follows:
1 post from any time during the month in either [community profile] carriero or [community profile] carriero_logs
OR
one to three decently sized threads in any post that was not your own in either [community profile] carriero or [community profile] carriero_logs. We'll leave "decently sized" up to your discretion, but basically, just show us that you have been active!

Characters that have been accepted/on hiatus within the last 14 days of the month have reduced requirements; they only need one post to pass the AC. In addition, there will be times that extraneous circumstances will lessen the requirements. In those cases, the mods will inform the game of the change.

17. I want to retcon something about/reset/canonupdate my character. What do I do?

Contact a mod! We'll handle this on a case-by-case basis, as there are specific catches to this that are not brought up in normal gameplay.
For retconning*/resetting**: If you can give us a reason why you want to do this, we will most likely approve it. We just ask you to not do it too often.
[* to retcon: To change something about your character that has already come up in-game or is in some other way essential to the way your character is played; for example when canon suddenly reveals your cute little boy to be a thousand years old evil mastermind or that your character has actually been dead the whole time.
**to reset: To erase all the in-game development that the character has gone through and nullify everything that has changed about them; to start over new like they were when they first came to the asylum.]

For canonupdating: If this includes a reset (as in, they come back from the future with no memory of the asylum), it works like retconning/resetting. If you want them to keep their memories, this is entirely possible, but, again, requires mod discussion.

If there are any questions on any of the above topics, or anything not already covered, feel free to ask them here.

bounty_hunter: Samus Aran and her 'baby' (Default)

Having Samus with a developing interest in videogame-making (She needs something to do) I wonder... what's exactly the highest level of performance permitted hacking the devices (Considering how they seems..powerful, not simple cellphones/smartphones/whatever)?
