application FAQ

1. Who can be apped?

We are a panfandom roleplay that permits OCs and canon AUs. As neat as they may be, we do not, however, allow the following:

→ AU versions of characters that are not canonical. (For example: Nyotalia characters given designs and notes, or TYL!Reborn, or Disappearance!Haruhi characters are perfectly fine, but not characters from The Genderbending of Haruhi Suzumiya, or Neville Longbottom the Chosen One, or entirely fan-created works.)
→ Fictional versions of Jesus, God, Mohammed, etc., or people who have committed major crimes against humanity (i.e. Hitler, Stalin, etc.).
→ Any real people. (There is the exception of fictional representations of a real person, such as Anastasia as portrayed in the 1997 animated film, provided that they are not in violation of the above.)
→ Doubles (The exception is if they are from different canons. For example: If there is a child!Okita Souji from Peacemaker Kurogane in the game, you may not apply for his adult version. You may, however, apply for Okita Souji from Kaze Hikaru or Hakuouki.)
→ Fandom OCs. (For example: Your own character from your own universe where humans can use magic, who went to a school for magic and ended up fighting the forces of evil is fine. Your own character who went to Hogwarts and fought Grindelwald is not fine.)

2. What if my character is extraordinarily large?

You may app characters of any size. They must, however, be downsized to fit through a door (7'x3'). For example: while a transformer, a giant or a dragon could be apped, they would be about only 8' tall normally, and their (if applicable) car transformations would be fit only to be driven by little children.

3. What if my character has a split personality or is practically one with another person?

This will be handled on a case by case basis. We ask players to contact the mods over this first (please see the contact post) and explain to us why they want to do it the way they want to do it. For example: Yugi/Yami Yugi, Halleluja/Allelujah: You could play both, or play only one and claim that the asylum gave them seperate bodies. Gretel/Hansel from Black Lagoon: You could play only one, or make a good case for them acting like one person and play both of them. We encourage all of the above, but we do ask that you discuss with us how you intend to handle it.

4. My character has a typing quirk - can I keep that? Or what about a speech quirk - how do you guys feel about eye dialect?

Short answer: where appropriate!

Long answer: If your character has some kind of quirk that will make your tags different from standard English, we'd like to ask you to do the following:
• When you apply, please make sure your canon resource demonstrates their quirk in action.
• In case that the quirk makes what they say or write hard to read: Please include translations when posting for those who ask. There are many options available to you for this, such as hovertext, brackets, and more.
• Keep it true to canon! In cases of speech in particular this is important. Nuances of diction can be got across without every word having letters marked out for the sake of your character's speech quirk, and not every word need be mistyped or stuttered. Likewise, speech patterns and typing patterns very rarely directly intersect - ask yourself, would your character be able to translate their typing quirk into speaking out loud, or deliberately stutter a text message?

5. Can my character bring their pets?

Yes, but there are four restrictions:
1. They must be downscaled to the size of a domestic cat. Magical pets will lose their abilities (outside of events) and be downsized as well.
2. There cannot be more than three per character.
3. There must be a good reason why they come with the character. Emotional dependence, actual physical dependence, or just the fact that you never see a character without the pet are good reasons. In general, if you want to bring a pet, it will be accepted on a case by case basis; it all depends on how good your reasoning is.
4. They need not be sentient enough to be apped as characters themselves. i.e. You couldn't bring Mokona from Tsubasa in as a pet, but the Magic Knight Rayearth version would be alright.

If you bring pets, we ask you to include the following into your application, as applicable: their name(s), their size, their number, their race, any abilities, and, most importantly, why they are important to your character.

6. What else can they bring?

Pretty much nothing. Everything that is a part of their body (like Edward Elric's automail) will stay with them, and items you argue as necessary for their sustained existence in the asylum (see #10), but everything else will be gone. They might get their weapons back during events, but don't count on it.

7. Why is there a suitability section?

Because not all children will mentally and physically survive being brought to Carriero. While one 8-year-old might have seen a lot of bad things already and have learned to survive on their own, another child of the same age might have grown up differently and be definitely not able to survive on their own. We want to see that they won't have to completely rely on a certain canonmate, completely break after a short time, or something similar.

The second magic word is "Keirsey."

8. What happens to powers in Carriero?

Upon arrival, all combat powers are taken away from the characters. There is something in the air that blocks them off. This changes when an event approaches: One day before it starts, their powers will be back because the substance in the air is removed, and they will stay until the event is over.

"Combat powers" constitute any actively used ability that can be used unfairly. Examples of combat powers include:

  1. Artificial strength
  2. Mind control
  3. Telekinesis
  4. Elemental magic
  5. Lasers
  6. Happening to be Samus Aran (i.e. really cool abilities partially derived from artificial or alien sources)
  7. Having really cool weapons

Examples that are not combat per se but still qualify:

  1. Teleportation
  2. Time travel
  3. Omniscience

Examples of abilities that are not combat powers, or not powers at all, and so will be kept:

  1. Healing
  2. Mind reading
  3. Happening to be Batman (i.e. really cool abilities purely attainable by human means)
  4. Having really cool body parts (wings, extra limbs, etc.)

Characters that have no supernatural powers, or that have lost all their powers, will gain one minor power.

9. Wait... what?

If Carriero leaves your character with no supernatural abilities at all, then they will gain one. Generally these have to do with a certain minor quirk of the character - a hobby of theirs, a minor physical trait, or a minor skill they have. The list of current characters' is the best reference for this. The best results tend to come from a humorous nerfing for weapon-bearing characters, a riff off of canon interactions for power-bearing characters, and a minor qirk of appearance or routine for ordinary characters.

10. What if my character needs some Super Special External Powersource to survive?

Linda will provide them with all their needs. Vampires will find blood in the cafeteria, and if there is something more special, please contact the mods about it and together we will find a way. In peculiarly canon-specific cases such as the organs of Reborn's Chrome, that are an illusion created by someone else, the exact reason there has been no change from canon may not be explicitly explored should you not care. Did Linda replace them? Was one of the old doctors a good illusionist? The world may never know...

11. Can my character filter the air to get their powers back?

Filter with what? And filter out what? The power-suppressant substances are powerful and diverse -- did you really think just one chemical could cancel out any supernatural phenomenon? The "something" in the air is multi-layered and sinister, and it takes an extremely delicate balance to get something that functions like normal air for breathing purposes in the end. If your character tries to liberate any given chemical, breathing the unmoderated result will probably make them pss out at the least.

12. Who the f*** is Linda?

The computer system that seems to be in charge. She's just trying to help you, really.

13. Hey, wait, didn't you say their powers will come back sometimes?

Yes, and when that happens, you will know that doom is near aka the next event. This is why we need a detailed description of what they can do. (This especially applies for powers that could game-break, such as teleportation or time travel, which may still be blocked.) The powers will be gone again the moment that the event is over.

14. Why was my application wavered/rejected?

If you were flat out rejected, you either:
- play three characters already and did not get an okay from the mods for apping a fourth;
- got banned from this game prior to applying;
- wrote a blatantly OOC app (like: Sasuke Uchiha as happy-go-lucky, a moe, cowardly Sam Winchester, or Ami Mizuno throwing bitch fits all the time.)
- or you just have other writing problems that make us question your suitability to our game.

We aren't elitist and rejections do not happen often, as we will ask you to revise your application if we think you can pull it off. If you cannot revise what we ask you to, you will unfortunately be rejected. If you have any questions about the revision request we give you, please don't hesitate to contact a mod for clarification.

15. What if I suck at writing samples?

That's okay, we all do! Logs from other roleplays, provided the character is from approximately the same canon point and the excerpt meets the wordcount will do. Musebox and dressing room, provided it's a non-meta setting, will also work.

If there are any other questions, please ask them here and we'll try to get back to you as quickly as possible. Good luck!
